- 1973 and a champion of the iconoclastic nonfiction of Tom Wolfe
- and other practitioners of "the New Journalism"; of cancer; in
- Los Angeles. Fostering a "smartass" sensibility for his
- magazine, Hayes helped produce such cheeky cover images as
- Lieut. William Calley of My Lai massacre fame posed benignly
- with a group of Asian children.
